In the year since Medicaid pandemic protections expired on April 1, 2023, states have terminated coverage for millions of vulnerable people. Often these terminations result from administrative errors, like an email going to spam, a letter lost in the mail, or long call center hold times. At least 54% of those who have lost Medicaid coverage are people of color.
Civil Rights organizations including the NAACP warned states that their plan to revoke Medicaid coverage would devastate communities of color, but the results are far worse than we expected. A quiet crisis is sweeping the nation, stripping healthcare coverage from the most vulnerable people. Something must be done.
The NAACP launched a campaign, “Hands Off Our Healthcare” to take action and work to reverse this crisis. You can learn more and take action at the Hands Off Our Healthcare page on the National NAACP’s web site.
